Cold Case Investigation Leads to Rape Conviction

Attorney General Luther Strange says 43-year-old Geoffrey Todd Mack pleaded Friday to first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and first-degree burglary charges.

The Gadsden Times reports that DNA samples from the 1996 crime
preserved by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences were used to identify Mack.

Information in the cold case investigation also led authorities to charge Mack in the home invasion last year.

He pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree burglary and third-degree robbery in that case.

The money to investigate violent sexual crimes that have been closed because of a lack of investigative leads comes from a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
