On June 28, 2011 the Dothan Police Department responded to a 911 call at the intersection of Citadel Avenue and Oglethorpe Street at 8:24 p.m.
The caller reported his four year old son was not breathing. Police and paramedics responded to the scene where they found the father attempting to resuscitate the child. Medics began to take over the effort but recognized immediately that the child was deceased and further found signs that the child had likely died several hours earlier.
The Command Staff for the Dothan Police Department say the investigation into this case will be extensive and further say all findings and conclusions made from the past twelve hours on the scene are preliminary and will be exhausted over the course of the investigation.
At this time, police findings have revealed a four year old Shawn Aldridge entered a vehicle which was parked at his residence while unsupervised. Once inside of the vehicle, the child was unable to open the doors because none of the handles were functional from the interior.
Police are awaiting a forensic opinion on the length of time in which the child was in the vehicle however several hours are unaccounted for based on statements of the parents. An autopsy is being performed at this time to establish a cause of death.
Police have taken the child’s mother and father into custody and have charged both with manslaughter.
