A Panama City man is in custody tonight after several failed attempts to commit "suicide by cop".
Bay County Sheriff's Deputies got a 9-1-1 call which took them to a Mary Ella Avenue address on Tuesday.
Deputies say when they arrived, they found 37 year old Shane Derek Smith standing in the middle of the road holding a large butcher knife.
As the deputy got out of his car, he says Smith started running towards him with knife raised, screaming for the deputy to shoot him.
The deputy drew his weapon and pointed it at Smith, telling him to stop and drop the knife.
Smith did stop about ten feet from the deputy and again demanded the deputy shoot him.
As the deputy was trying to convince Smith to put down the knife, Smith said he had nothing to live for.
The deputy backed away from Smith to a safe distance and holstered his gun, telling Smith he wished to help him and not shoot him. Smith stated his story was too long to tell before he died.
Another sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene.
When Smith saw the second patrol car he ran out in front of the vehicle in an apparent attempt to get hit.
The newly arrived deputy stopped the car and got out of the car.
The first deputy took out his taser and fired the weapon when Smith turned back toward him with the knife raised.
Smith dropped the knife and was handcuffed and put in the back of the patrol car.
EMS was called to the scene and Smith was checked and cleared for transport to the Bay County Jail where he was booked on a charge of Aggravated Assault.
