January 6, 2011
Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen announced today the arrest of a local man on a charge of extortion. The victim contacted the BCSO on January 5, 2011 when she received a phone call from a man who had obviously been observing the victim and her family. He told her many details about their life and threatened to kill her family if she did not give him money.
Working with the victim, Bay County Sheriff’s Office investigators set up a sting and caught the suspect when he arrived at a redetermined drop location to pick up an envelope containing what he thought was a payoff from his intended victim. Charles Joseph Davis was surprised not only to find just $328.00 in the envelope—he had demanded $5000 from his victim—but that the envelope bore the return address of the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
Davis, DOB 3/21/60, a transient, was arrested by the Sheriff McKeithen and charged with Extortion, Grand Theft, and Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Device. He was taken to the Bay County Jail.
