The Bay County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service from the property manager of an apartment complex in Callaway on May 10, 2011.
The manager stated that while reviewing invoices for purchases made by a former maintenance worker and a former manager, the property manager discovered many of the items could not be found and that twenty-three apartments were missing inside and outside air conditioning units.
Several apartments were missing either the inside unit or the outside unit. The total value of missing items came to approximately $81,000.
The former maintenance worker Kenneth Donald Penland was contacted by BCSO Criminal Investigations investigators. Penland, along with a former manager, had worked at the complex from February 2011 to March 2011 when both were released by the company.
After speaking with Penland, investigators believe he took the missing items valued at approximately $81,000 and sold them for $1,400. Penland was arrested on May 19, 2011, and charged with Grand Theft ($20,000 to $100,000), and Dealing in Stolen Property.
The investigation continues and additional arrests and charges expected.
