The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian that occurred around 5:00 AM today, June 21st. Robert Freeman (no fixed address known at this time) was struck by a vehicle as he walked on the access driveway between Dewey Destin's Seafood and The Fisherman's Wharf off Highway 98 in Destin. He was walking down the hill toward the docks when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck or SUV that was also traveling on the access driveway toward the docks. The driver of the vehicle that struck him did not stop to help him or remain at the scene.
A witness reports seeing a newer model white extended cab truck, possibly a Chevy or GMC, at the docks near the time of the crash. The truck had an unknown website sticker starting with "www" in the rear window. It is not known if the driver was a witness or involved in the crash. The OCSO would like to identify and interview that driver if possible.
Freeman sustained serious injuries in the crash and is currently admitted at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center. He was stable and undergoing surgery as of 1:00 PM.
Anyone with information on this hit and run is asked to contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office at 651-7400.
