On December 28, 2011 at approximately 7:30 PM, the Ashford Police Department answered a shoplifting call to the Dollar General Store located in Ashford, Alabama.
It was determined that seven quarts of charcoal lighter fluid had been taken from a sidewalk display in front of the store by a young black male and a young white male.
The two suspects were observed by store employees running with the property in a northerly direction. At approximately 8:00 PM, Officer Flowers of the Ashford Police Department was on routine patrol when he discovered a large fire located at the entrance of the Ashford High School Gymnasium.
Oficer Flowers was unable to extinguish the fire and called for Ashford Fire/Rescue, who arrived within moments and extinguished the blaze. It was determined that the fire had been deliberately set in a large trash container located at the entrance of the gymnasium. The fire damaged a wall of the gymnasium and the roof.
The Alabama State Fire Marshall's Office was contacted and assisted the Ashford Police and Fire Departments in their investigations. Information was obtained on the identities of the two suspects at approximately 9:00 AM on December 29, 2011.
The Ashford Police Department arrested two suspects, charging each with one count of Arson, Second Degree and Theft of Property, Third Degree.
Taken into custody were one eighteen year old black male, Kameron Chase Jackson of Ashford and a fifteen year old white male juvenile. Jackson is being held in the Houston County Jail on a $5,000.00 bond and the juvenile is being held in the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center.
I wish to express my appreciation to Officer Flowers and Ashford Fire/Rescue for their diligence and quick responses, as this situation could have become a disaster for Ashford High School. I also wish to express my appreciation to the Alabama State Fire Marshall's Office for their assistance in this case. As always, assistance from our citizens also played a crucial role in the apprehension of these suspects.
