TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) -- A prank played by a group of teenage boys in northern Alabama has left a 15-year-old shot in the head.
Jesse Rainey was listed in critical condition Saturday at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May told Al.com that the shooting happened early Saturday morning at a rural home in Tuscumbia where eight teenagers had gone for the weekend. No adults were present.
May said a group went outside to play a prank. They flipped off an electrical breaker to turn out the lights. Rainey then hid in a closet as part of the prank.
When one boy opened that closet door, Rainey jumped out to scare him.
The boy fired a gun, shooting Rainey in the head.
Authorities are investigating the case as an accidental shooting.
