Accused Auburn Shooter to Stand Trial Before Grand Jury

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A district judge has sent a capital murder and assault charges against Desmonte Leonard to a grand jury.

District judge Russell Bush ruled Wednesday at a preliminary hearing where a police detective described a pool party in Auburn that ended with three people killed and three people wounded.

Police Detective Jude Hackett testified that witnesses say shooting victim DeMario Pitts struck Leonard and an associate with a bottle before Leonard started firing shots at a pool party.

Hackett said 23-year-old Turquorius Vines identified Leonard as the gunman who killed three people, including Pitts, at an apartment complex last month.

Some of the shooting victims were recorded by the complex's security cameras, but no one with a gun could be seen in the tapes played in a court hearing Wednesday in Opelika.
