MIAMI (AP) - Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez says a Miami-Dade
police officer has died during surgery after a shootout with a
suspect in Miami.
Alvarez said Thursday that the suspect, who was also killed, shot at police as they served a warrant and then they shot at him.
Earlier, another police officer died at the scene.
Alvarez added the officer who died at the hospital had been shot
multiple times and the other police officer was shot once.
The identities of the officers and the suspect weren't immediately available.
The shooting occurred in Liberty City and two schools in the neighborhood have been placed on lockdown.
Authorities say the two officers were attached to a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force involving multiple police agencies.
The task force works to locate and arrest people wanted for crimes from all over the country.
He didn't immediately have details on the operation or what crimes the suspects may have been wanted for.
