DOTHAN, AL--The grandparents of the two young children who died in a fatal fire in Dothan almost a month ago say they're thankful for the community's support.
On January 7th, 4-year-old Byron Harvey and 1-year-old Ariel Harvey were fatally injured after their home went a blaze in the 200 block of Ginnalou Drive.
Three adults were seriously injured as well.
The family didn't have burial insurance so grandparents opened a funeral fund.
They say the community donated more than $4,000.
"We know it had to be a gift of god because people's heart went out and we just want to let them know we sure appreciate it," said grandfather Roger Slater.
"It's hard to explain how the people just reached out to us, I mean people that we don't even know, they just showed love and we just want to give back and let them know we appreciate what they done," said grandmother Shelley Slater.
The grandparents say they plan to organize a non-profit to help families who are struck by tragedy.
They say the three adults who were injured are doing better.
And as we told you a few weeks ago, fire officials were unable to determine the cause of the fire.
