The Annual Wiregrass Wreaths Across America® Ceremony will be held at Sunset Memorial Park on Saturday, December 15. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. The general public is invited to attend and participate.
Wreaths Across America® began in 1992 after Worcester Wreath Company found themselves with a surplus of wreaths near the end of the holiday season. Remembering his boyhood experience at Arlington, Morrill Worcester realized he had an opportunity to honor our country’s veterans. With the help of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, arrangements were made for the wreaths to be placed in one of the older sections of Arlington Cemetery.
Over the years, WAA has been taken to a new level. Not only will wreaths be placed in Arlington but also identical wreaths will be laid at the graves of veterans across the United States. Sunset Memorial Park in Dothan, Ala., has been involved for several years as an official participating cemetery.
Sunset Memorial Park encourages individuals and businesses to participate in this emotional ceremony.
“The goal of this ceremony is to honor our veterans in the Wiregrass,” says Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Director Robert Byrd. “We want to offer families a way to celebrate the life of their veteran by either sponsoring a wreath or personally placing it on the grave of their loved one.”
