Christmas may be a few months out of reach, but the Wiregrass Area Food Bank received a priceless gift today.
"It was totally unexpected," said Julie Gonzalez.
Unexpected...Yes...but it's a gift just the same...but what surprises Julie the most is the timing of this donation.
"A donation this size usually only happens when we put out a cry for help."
Just because they didn't put out a cry for help though, doesn't mean the Wiregrass Food Bank wasn't hurting.
"We heard that the Wiregrass Food Bank was really low on resources," explained Al Bloom.
And that's when the Feds Feeds Families program jumped into action.
"They called last week and said hey, we have this food drive going on and we have seen that you guys are in great need and that your food bank is in need of a lot of canned goods."
And just like that...Julie found herself overwhelmed with food...But she says being overwhelmed is a great thing.
Thanks to the Feds Feed Families program the Wiregrass Area Food Bank got nearly a ton of food...now that won't just help fill these shelves behind me but it'll also help those families in need.
"This has been such a blessing for us."
A blessing made possible by the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System...but today isn't their first time helping out.
"The last two or three years, we've raised over 8 million pounds of food nationwide."
And Julie is just thrilled that this year, the program set its sights on the Wiregrass...helping her stretch her supplies just a little bit further.
