HARTFORD, AL - Wiregrass Electric Cooperative reported nearly 2,000 customers in the Webb area out of power last night around 7 p.m. A substation transformer had failed, causing the outage. By 11:30 p.m., all members had their power restored.

"As soon as the outage occurred, our systems notified us of the failure and we started work to fix the problem," says Brad Kimbro, director of Member Services at WEC. Because of the nature of the outage, PowerSouth Energy Cooperative, WEC's wholesale energy partner, had to handle a segment of the repairs. "PowerSouth Electric had a crew on the road to the substation immediately."

The substation already had a replacement transformer on site for just such an emergency. "Having this replacement already on hand at the Webb substation in Houston County saved a large amount of time in fixing the repair," says Kimbro. "Having a plan and having a backup really helped us restore power as quickly as possible. Also, PowerSouth dispatched a mobile substation as well, just in case we needed it."

Crews worked quickly to install a new transformer and bring power back online.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused," says Kimbro. "We want our members to know that they can always find out more information about an outage on our website, www.wiregrass.coop, and we try to post frequent updates to our Facebook and Twitter accounts as well."
