Not taking extra precautions can leave your home open to burglars.
"A lot of people will put a message on their voice mail, telling people they are out of town and you don't know who is calling your phone, that might not be the best idea to advertise that on there, " says David Schwab, Community Watch Program Coordinator.
There are steps you can take to make your home safe while you're away.
"I always get with our neighbors and make sure they pick up our mail, never leave mail in the mailbox when your going to be gone 3 or 4 days," says Charles Wright, a local home owner.
"Check your outdoor lights, your motion lights and also your porch light, make sure they are working and its a good idea to put your porch light on a timer if you can and also put some timers inside the house on random lights in the house, it makes the house look lived in and decreases the chance that a bad guy is going to break in on you," says Schwab.
Its easy to forget while on vacation you've left your home unattended but simple things like checking your mail can really help ease your mind.
"That's a dead give away, if you're accruing mail or newspapers in your drive way, bad guys are going to know you're not home".
"The main thing is your mail box, if they see a lot of mail, they know there is nobody home or if you get a news paper, get your neighbor to pick up your news paper, don't let a bunch of news papers stay in your front yard, that's a big sign, " says Wright.
"They can check their locks, make sure they are working on all of their windows and doors and then also make sure that they are locked before they leave," says Schwab.
"Give a key to a trusted friend or family member, don't leave a key outside the house for people to come in because the bad guys know where your hiding keys and they are going to find them and they are going to get in and do something they shouldn't be doing".
It could make the difference from coming home, or to an empty house.
The Dothan Police Department also has a program you can sign up for when you go out of town.
Officers will actually drive by your home to make sure everything is in order.
