MIAMI Records show that the murder suspect who was killed in Miami a shootout that also left two police officers dead had a lengthy criminal record and was released from prison less than six months ago.

The shooting happened Thursday as a team of law enforcement agents tried to serve a warrant.

Miami-Dade Police Director James Loftus says 21-year veteran Roger Castillo was shot and died at the scene. Amanda Haworth, a 23-year veteran, was taken to a hospital and later died. Another officer shot and killed the suspect, 22-year-old Johnny Simms, who had a handgun.

According to the Florida Department of Corrections, Simms was released from prison in September. His criminal record includes convictions for grand theft of a vehicle, robbery with a weapon and
cocaine distribution.
