Travelling While Pregnant Can be Safe

Dothan, AL - Summer is here, and many are planning vacations. But expecting mothers like Katie Killingworth may need to make a few modifications.

This isn’t Katie’s first go around. When pregnant with her first baby, she took a 15 hour drive to Oklahoma. Since then, she’s learned a few lessons.

“I think one of my biggest tips is to make sure and factor in potty breaks. I don’t know that a lot of people think of that,” she said.

Experts have a few other tips. It may seem like a no-brainer, but first check with your doctor.
“Make sure they’re not having complications with their pregnancy that would prohibit them from traveling either a short distance or longer trips,” said Dr. Thomas Robinson with the Southeast Alabama Medical Center.

Also, reconsider travel at 36 weeks and after, and move around frequently to avoid blood clots.

“I would recommend at least every hour and a half or two hours to take a break and walk outside of the car. Most of the time if you’re drinking a lot of fluid you’re going to have to stop anyways,” said Robinson.

Killingsworth added, “Also make sure you know where the hospitals are just in case. It never hurts to be prepared.”

Bring a copy of your medical records as well. Should an emergency come up, doctors will have necessary information.

“If a patient hasn’t had problems prior to travel they are going to be ok. If they take a copy of their records if they do have an emergency they can always drop into a local emergency room and have their records with them so they can receive better care,” said Robinson.

If travelling oversea, talk with your doctor about vaccinations and be careful of what you eat and drink. In developing nations, stay away from tap water and ice. Also, avoid fresh fruits and veggies unless cooked.

If you use your own good judgment along with doctor’s recommendations, experts say it will help you have a safe and fun summer vacation.
