It is supposed to be the busiest times of the year for Lake Eufaula.
But Mother Nature did not get that memo.
Willie Thornton, Marine Police Officer said, “Within a span of about 6 hours only saw a couple of boats.”
Hotels that are usually buzzing with holiday travelers now have phones ringing off the hook with cancellations. The Lakepoint State Park Resort has seen dozens of cancellations.
Mark Jackson, Superintendent Lakepoint State Park said, “We have had some people come in maybe a week early just to spend the whole week with us, and some of them have left early. So, they were hoping the weather would change but it didn’t work out for them.”
But some travelers like Ritchie McCarley are not letting a little rain dampen the true meaning of the holiday.
Ritchie McCarley said, "The independence of this country that allows us to do such, to live the lives we have. You know blessed with children and family, and things like that, it is just the best place to be.”
For now the resort is hoping for a better forecast for Saturday’s festivities, where they will host the 50th anniversary party for the lake and Independence Day fireworks rain or shine.
