Tornadoes in Decline for Second Straight Year Across Nation, Alabama

For the second year in a row, the US is on track to be below the average for tornadoes.

According to data compiled by the storm prediction center in Norman, Oklahoma so far this year there have been 609 tornadoes.

In Alabama, 23 tornadoes have touched down. In 2012, there were 55. Over 20 of those happened during the mini-tornado season in the fall. On Christmas Day alone, 17 tornadoes touched down.

In 2011, there were 145 tornadoes in Alabama and is considered one of the most active tornado years on record, since records started being kept in the 1950’s.

While the overall number of tornadoes has been down so far this year, the largest tornado on record touched down in Oklahoma in May.
