Nearly 8.0% of Americans are out of work across the country.
Here in Dothan the numbers are about the same at 8.1%.
So it's no surprise that thousands attended a job fair in Dothan today hoping their luck will change.
Just as you said thousands were in line waiting to talk to employers. I heard story after story of people out of work, so they went to the civic center hoping for the perfect opportunity to land a job.
From standing in line outside, to standing in line inside, the need to wait in this line was the same.
"To get a job," says a local job seeker.
"To find me a job, I need me a job bad," says a local job seeker.
"I came here basically looking for employment," says a local job seeker.
"I am here today because I am looking for a job, I just got let go from my job," says local job seeker Jessica Porter.
And even though Jessica Porter has been out of work a couple of months, she says she needs this opportunity just like any other person in the room.
"I know others have masters and their degrees and I'm just kinda of entry level," says Porter.
Now here at the job fair applicants got a chance o take home bags full of resources to get that perfect job, they also took home applications, to apply for the perfect job, just for them.
Some chose not to wait to fill out an application. Instead they put pen to paper.
Some even had success stories on sight.
"I have four interviews, set up for this week, and hopefully the right one will come my way," says job seeker DeAndre Simmons.
Organizers say that creating a success story like Simmons depends on self presentation
"Everybody loves someone with a great attitude, everyone lives to give someone a chance, or someone who is really in need," says job fair organizer Lawrence Keener, Sr.
A need Jessica Porter hopes will soon be fulfilled.
When I left the job fair people were still flowing into the civic center, and many people I spoke to were determined to be persistent and not leave until they spoke to a potential employer.
