ATHENS, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama teenager made a strong showing in a Limestone County school board race, garnering enough votes Tuesday to force a run-off with an incumbent more than twice his age.

The News Courier reports that 18-year-old political newcomer Cory Elrod got 20 votes more than 50-year-old incumbent school board member Anthony Hilliard of Athens in the District 6 school board race.

It was not enough to defeat the incumbent board member. So, the two will face each other in the April 24 Republican primary runoff election.

Elrod, a college student at Calhoun Community College, drew 383 votes, or 43 percent of the total vote, to Hilliard's 363 votes, or 41 percent.
