(Dothan)—The Houston County Sheriff’s Office is utilizing surveillance video and hidden microphones to take the guess work out of police work.

“Anytime we pull someone over, or someone comes in contact with one of our officers, chances are they’re being recorded,” Captain Antonio Gonzalez Houston County Sheriff’s Office Captain Antonio Gonzalez said. “We do it to protect not only our officers, but citizens as well,” he said.

The tapes are monitored after a complained has been filed with the department.

“We spend a lot of time reviewing tapes, “Gonzalez said. “The majority of calls we receive are by people who have been pulled over and if we find that an officer is in the wrong, then we take immediate disciplinary action,” he said.

The majority of the department’s cars are equipped with surveillance cameras. The updated technology is determined by the budget set by the county.
