Study: Alabama Among Highest Sales Tax States

The study by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation in Washington found that the average of city, county and state sales taxes in Alabama is 8.64 percent.

That is sixth highest.

The study found 45 states levy a statewide sales tax.

Alabama's statewide tax rate of 4 percent ties for the second-lowest state
tax rate.

But the city and county sales taxes in Alabama average 4.64 percent.

That's second-highest in the nation for local sales taxes.

Only Louisiana is higher.

The local and state taxes are combined to get Alabama's overall rate of 8.84 percent.

Tennessee leads the nation at 9.43 percent.
