Southern Poverty Law Center Files Lawsuit Challenging Alabama Accountability Act

The Southern Poverty Law Center is Challenging Alabama’s School Accountability Act.

The law provides tax credits to families that transfer their children from failing public schools to private schools.

The law center contends the law discriminates against poor students in central Alabama counties. It says, those students cannot afford to go to private schools and non-failing public schools in nearby counties are not accessible.

The suit challenges the law on equal protection grounds and asks a Federal Judge to permanently block it.

Governor Robert Bentley defended the law on Monday, saying it is designed to help students in all public schools.
