Souper Bowl of Caring

It's a relatively new spin on an old name. The Super Bowl is nearing and the wiregrass area food bank is looking to pair the nation's biggest game with the area's biggest need.

Hunger. It affects one in six people in the United States. Even more sadly, one in four children live in food insecure households. Those figures come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Wiregrass Area Food Bank is looking to fight those statistics by incorporating a great American sport.

The Souper Bowl is coming.... S-o-u-p that is.

Shirley Henderson Brown Bag Coordinator
"Souper Bowl of caring is when the community comes together and helps give soup to needy people,” Brown Bag Coordinator Shirley Henderson said. “We just use the Super Bowl as a time to do it. People are getting together watching the game, and then we're just helping the community.

The soup helps to fill brown bags for the food bank. 1,500 senior citizens throughout six counties benefit from the program and the challenge is on for residents to help drive in the soup.

No matter what team you pull for, everybody is in the Souper Bowl this year. The Wiregrass Area Food Bank needs your help.

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics of Dothan answered the call and is a drop-off point for the canned goods. Others have joined the list too, and anyone who wishes to join the cause is encouraged to help. Drop-offs are located throughout the Wiregrass.

"You probably don't have to go far from your home to find one,” Pary Sumlar of Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics said. “We're right here in the middle of Dothan and easy to find if anybody wants to bring food to help those that are more needy, don't hesitate to do it."

It doesn't take much to help. Six cans go in each brown bag handed out for the month. That's only a little more than six extra dollars at the grocery.

"Please, come and help us give out the soup to every senior citizen that's on the brown bag program here in the Wiregrass,” Henderson said.”
