It is important to protect your skin from UV rays, but it is equally as important to protect your eyes. Sun exposure builds up over the years. If you're not careful, you might run into problems down the road.
“Exposure to sun over time can increase your risk of macular degeneration,” said Dr. Brent McKinley, an ophthalmologist at Dothan Eye Care.
Macular degeneration is one of the common causes of blindness. In severe cases, it can cause hallucinations. The best shield from eye disease is polarized sunglasses.
“Using good sunglasses that have UV blocking ability is very important,” explained Dr. McKinley.
However, no one wants "raccoon eyes" at the beach, so Dr. McKinley suggested wearing a hat to shade your face.
Routine eye exams are significant to prevention. Eye lenses do not repair themselves and some diseases do not have symptoms.
Dr. McKinley said, “There are those patients that come in with no known problems, then we do an exam and they do have an issue going on that they weren't aware of that if we catch early, we can help save their vision.”
It may take years for problems to surface, but do not let that cloud your judgment of eye safety.
