FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama woman is scheduled to stand trial in September for the 2011 slaying of a man shot in a church parking lot.
Reports say DeKalb County Circuit Court has set a Sept. 9 trial date has been set for 39-year-old Patty Elaine Westbrook of Crossville. She is charged with capital murder in the death of 74-year-old Boyce Charles Batey.
Authorities say Batey was giving Westbrook a ride in March 2011 when she asked him to pull over near Macedonia Baptist Church. He was shot in the chest in the church parking lot and his truck was stolen. Batey was found alive but died two months later.
Westbrook was arrested in Guntersville the day of the shooting. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
