Carmike Theatres popped open their doors to families donating to the Wiregrass community.
"It’s a fundraiser to bring in canned goods for our families for Christmas" Salvation Army Major Cheryl Phillips said.
For about 75 years, the theatre teamed with Salvation Army to host free movie screenings.
Together, they promote giving back during the holidays.
“It’s Christmas time so I want to give. It makes me happy so I want to make them happy.” Dothan resident Briena said.
They have a steep goal of 35 thousand cans.
But there's more than just a family-fun movie to show appreciation.
“They get free popcorn and a free drink along with that. So it’s a great event for your family to come on out and join us. All you have to do is bring three canned goods.” Phillips said.
It's an event that brought out the holiday spirit, and gave something fun in return.
“I wanted to help people all along, especially in December, it’s fun. And hey, if they're less fortunate, maybe fortunate people can donate.” Dothan resident Kajarvius said.
"Everybody understands that this food is going to help our needy families so that's just a blessing in itself.” Phillips said.
Not only can you feed families with canned goods but you can make a child happy with a new toy.
Wal-mart paired up with Salvation Army to fill their Toy Trucks.
“To make sure we cover everybody and that no child gets left out.” Salvation Army Volunteer Gina Daniels said.
This is the first year Wal-mart participated in the program.
There were 200 children still in need of toys, and volunteers relied on the community.
“We know the people in Dothan are going to take good care of our children so that's what we're hoping for.” Daniels said.
The Salvation Army will distribute the toys and cans on December 21st.
You can bring a new toy to the peanut festival fairgrounds up until that deadline, just in time for Christmas.
