TROY – The Rev. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be the keynote speaker at the annual Leadership Conference Celebrating African-American History Month at Troy University in February.

The theme for this year’s event, which will be held Feb. 7-8, is “Leadership, Unity, Empowerment: Celebrating the Civil Rights Legacy.” The conference was launched in 2002 and seeks to bring individuals together to promote dialogue that fosters multicultural collaboration and equip diverse leaders with the tools to better serve their organizations and communities. The conference is co-sponsored by Troy University and the City of Troy.

King will provide the conference’s opening address. The opening session is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the Trojan Center Theatre on the Troy Campus. The conference will continue on Feb. 8 with plenary sessions scheduled for the morning hours and culminating with a closing luncheon and awards ceremony.

King began her speaking career at the age of 17, speaking before the United Nations in place of her mother. Since that time, she has spoken at engagements around the world and has been featured on such television shows as “Oprah,” “BET Talk with Tavis Smiley” and the “Judge Hatchett Show.” King has also guest hosted a live, lunchtime television show on CNN.

King also has been featured in numerous magazines, including People, Ebony, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Gospel Today and Charisma, and was recently recognized by American Legacy Magazine as a “Woman of Strength and Courage.”

An ordained preacher, King is a minister at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga. She has coordinated a number of conferences on non-violent conflict resolution for college and university students, as well as seminars for women and families.

King is a graduate of Spellman College with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and holds a Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Law degrees from Emory University. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Georgia.
