MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The holiday season is not normally a time for elections, but voters in southwest Alabama will be going to the polls Tuesday for a special election in the 1st Congressional District.
Republican Bradley Byrne of Fairhope and Democrat Burton Leflore of Mobile are facing off in the six-county district.
It's a lopsided race in many ways. Byrne has raised $1.1 million, and Leflore has taken in nearly $7,000. Byrne has support from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, the National Rifle Association and Jo Bonner, who previously held the seat. National Democratic groups have taken a pass on Leflore's campaign.
Byrne says he's running an aggressive advertising and phone call campaign to remind voters of the rare special election a week before Christmas.
