Probate Judge Switches to GOP

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The governor and several other top Alabama Republicans turned out in Montgomery to welcome Crenshaw County Probate Judge Jim Perdue to their party.

Perdue announced his party switch Wednesday on the Statehouse steps. He was re-elected in November as a Democrat, but he said the Republican Party is the best place for his conservative values.

Perdue is the first Republican official in the Crenshaw County Courthouse in Luverne.

He is a well-known figure in Montgomery politics because of his service as president of the Alabama Probate Judges Association and his frequent visits to the Legislature to work on bills affecting county governments. Gov. Robert Bentley said he's known Perdue for two years, and he's always been a conservative public servant.
