Trash was a major talking point tonight at the Dale County Commission meeting. The commission is moving towards bidding out garbage pickup.
Nearly a half a million dollars is needed to upgrade the program. The commission sees having an independent contractor take over, as a money saver.
Dale Co. Commission Chairman Mark Blankenship said, "Be able to reduce the number of employees we have in the county system. And of course with rising costs in healthcare, workmens comp, those kinds of things, we hope to save some money by doing that."
That doesn’t necessarily mean those handful of employees will be without a job.
The commission will recommend the contractor hire them since they know the routes.
Final touches need to be made before the commission can vote on whether or not to bid it out.
Bidding it out could also prevent garbage rate increases.
