Ozark Woman Battles Rare Terminal Illness

Ozark, AL - To most people Raechel Buchanan looks like any other mom. She spends her days trying to keep up the energy to raise her kids, but for Rachel it takes a lot more effort. She’s battling a rare, terminal illness.

She said, “It’s called catastrophic antiphospholipid anticoagulant syndrome.”

Basically, that means her blood is very think and clots form easily, oftentimes moving to her lungs.

“Pulmonary embolisms kill people usually the first time. I've had so many of them that I'm a miracle,” said Raechel.

But Raechel’s body continues to reject blood thinners, and doctors say she likely has about a year left to live.
She said, “I grew up in foster care and all I ever wanted to be was a mom. To have those joys taken away from me is devastating.”

But now, the Memories of Love Foundation is hoping to give her back some of that joy. They are providing a trip to Orlando in June.

“This is certainly not the way I wanted to go on vacation. But basically my wish is to see my children more happy than they've ever been before. We've never had a family vacation,” said Raechel.

“I think it's going to be like the beach, but it's going to be bigger and better,” said her daughter Kiya.

But their assistance alone won’t get them there. That’s why her friends are helping organize fundraisers.
“There are gas expenses, food expenses. While the foundation has been wonderful, this disease has been devastating to their family financially and emotionally,” said her friend Teresa Cavender.

A pancake breakfast is being held at Colby’s in Ozark to help raise funds. It will be Saturday, June 8 from 7:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per plate.

Also, a donation account has been set up at The Commercial Bank of Ozark.
