A Coast Guard report released Friday says birds, sea turtles, fish and other species are more likely to be damaged by an aggressive cleanup than by simply leaving remnants of oil in place and letting it slowly degrade.

The report is designed to guide the cleanup of the BP PLC. spill from the April 20 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion.

The cleanup continues in many places along the Gulf Coast, but Friday's report urged against trying to clean up every last bit of oil.
