MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A Montgomery County judge has been appointed to hear the case over the attorney general's raid of VictoryLand casino in Macon County.

Chief Justice Roy Moore appointed Montgomery County Circuit Judge William Shashy to hear the case after all qualified judges in Macon County stepped aside from hearing it.

State Attorney General Luther Strange raided the casino in February and seized 1,615 gambling machines and more than $223,000 in cash. The court case involves whether the state can keep the cash and destroy the machines. The casino has been closed since the raid.

VictoryLand was once the largest private employer and largest taxpayer in rural Macon County. Its owner, Milton McGregor, says the machines are legal electronic bingo, but the attorney general says they are illegal slot machines.
