OZARK, Ala. (AP) -- The school bus driver who replaced slain Dale County driver Chuck Poland says little by little she's been able to connect with children on his bus route.
Melinda Campbell had been a substitute driver until she was asked to take over Poland's route following his shooting death. Poland was killed Jan. 29 while trying to stop a man from kidnapping a 5-year-old student from his bus.
Campbell says the children who were on the bus would not have warmed up to her like they have if Poland had not done such a wonderful job of loving and caring for them. She says she and the students have found different ways to connect. One way was to name her 3-month-old bulldog, Miss Poly, in honor of Poland.
