Much of Alabama still recovering from snow and ice

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Schools, government offices and
businesses remain closed for the second day in much of the northern
half of Alabama as the state continues to recover from what was a
near record snowfall in some areas.

Gov. Bob Riley ordered state offices north of Clanton to remain
closed for the second straight day Tuesday.

In the Huntsville area, where 8.9 inches of snow was reported
late Sunday and early Monday, the sprawling Redstone Arsenal Army
base remained closed to all but essential personnel.

Many businesses, offices and schools remained closed in the
Birmingham area. The trial of two Birmingham police officers
charged with beating a suspect was delayed for a second day because the federal courthouse was closed.
