MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Montgomery's mayor says the city has no legal authority to tear down a bar where two people were shot to death and six others injured.
But Mayor Todd Strange says any future use of the site must be consistent with the wishes of the community and the safety of the city.
The mayor's comments came after he received an electronic petition with more than 2,000 names. It encouraged the city to tear down the Centennial Hill Bar and Grill.
The mayor said Tuesday the city has no legal authority to demolish the building because its structural safety is not an issue. But he said the city did use its authority to close the business immediately after the shootings Saturday because it posed a continuing threat to customer safety.
