Upcoming Vote on Southeast Alabama Solid Waste Authority

Houston County Commissioners will vote on Monday to no longer be a member of Southeast Alabama Solid Waste Authority.

The authority started 20-years-ago. At the time, Houston County was looking for somewhere to dispose solid waste and joined the authority.

Once voted on, the authority will still be able to operate within the county. But, Houston County will work with the City of Dothan, taking their solid waste to the city’s landfill.

County Commission Chairman Mark Culver says the Authority serves a great purpose for their partners in Southeast Alabama, but Houston County is not an essential part of that anymore.

"We're working with the city of Dothan for obvious convenience issues and we've gotten a real good price and we have a good partnership with the city so at this point there's really no reason for us to be in the authority," said Culver.

Not renewing their membership with the authority will save the county about 30-percent.
