Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz is traveling overseas next month. He will spend 10 days in China, visiting three different cities, plus Hong Kong. Mayor Schmitz is meeting one-on-one with company executives and is hoping to create some interest for new prospects. He plans to meet with auto part manufacturing companies, and shoe manufacturers—although no deals have been made yet.
For the last six months, Mayor Schmitz has been building relationships with Chinese investors to get an edge on economic growth. He said that kind of foundation will deliver.
“The Asia Society is about relationships. That has been my goal the last six months, to create relationships and get them here. We're trying to create an opportunity for the serious investors, the manufacturers who are serious about investing in the United States. We get the first look, and I think we've done that, and hopefully in March, we'll prove it,” explained Mayor Schmitz.
Between 350 and 400 Chinese companies are expected to attend the U.S.-China Manufacturing Symposium in Dothan from March 26th to March 28th. As of now, there are some 60 speakers from all over the world and Alabama Governor Robert Bentley is committed to attend.
Mayor Schmitz will depart for China February 16th and return the 26th.
