TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - A Texas man convicted in Alabama of hauling about 200 pounds of cocaine has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
U.S. District Court Judge L. Scott Coogler sentenced 46-year-old Jose Antonio Herrera of Weslaco, Texas, on Wednesday following his
conviction last year on possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
The Birmingham News reports that a federal jury found Herrera guilty in October of transporting the cocaine in a hidden compartment of a tractor trailer that he drove through Tuscaloosa County in May.
Defense attorney Everett Wess said he plans to appeal Herrera's
conviction. Herrera said he did not know the cocaine was in the truck.
