They take care of people every day.
Hospital employees often sacrifice their time for others.
And this year, three flowers hospital employees made a big enough impact to be recognized by the state.

“I really enjoy my job.” Cancer registry coordinator Joanne Powers said.

One of those people is Joanne powers.
Powers, an employee of nine years, works as a cancer registry coordinator.

“I’m the one who enters the data on cancer patients.” Powers said.

And just two years ago, powers went from employee to patient.

“2010 I was diagnosed with ms probably had it since 1998. Had some struggles, not at first, had a lot of struggles with it last year which my walking was to the point I was using a walker. And I was even to the point I was in a wheelchair. I couldn’t even walk through Wal-Mart.” Powers said.

But despite the news, powers continued to work and push past her disability, leading others to be inspired.

“It’s been a struggle but I’ve been able to walk because of advancements in medicines and our jobs is to try and promote advancements and try to get that better treatment to others.” Powers said.

Powers was nominated by her superiors and received the hospital hero award, an award only nine people in the state received.

“I just hope I can inspire others through it to not give up on the challenges they face. We can conquer anything.” Powers said.

And just like her co-workers said...powers spirit and perseverance are contagious.

“I have ms but ms doesn’t have me.” Powers said.

Two others flowers employees, Cynthia Wilson and Dr. Roland brooks, also received the hospital hero award.
Powers is on a committee that has started the ms walks in Dothan.
In fact the next ms walk for a cure will be held March 9th.
