Dothan, AL- A Dothan man is behind bars after a six hour standoff with police.
Police say the suspect held four people hostage, including children, for hours.
Shawn Smith, 30, is facing four counts of first degree kidnapping. He's in the Houston County Jail under an $800,000 bond.
The standoff started Wednesday night around 10:30. That's when officers got called to a home on Corvette Drive in Kinsey.
At one time 25 officers from Kinsey, Webb, and Houston County were at the scene.
Police say Smith was holding his former common law wife and her three kids hostage. They claim he was armed with a knife and threatened to light them on fire.
A negotiator tried to talk with Smith and the hostages, but there was no response.
Police forced their way into the house and arrested Smith early Thursday morning.
“He was detaining them in the rear bedroom of the house. He was restricting their movement. He would not let them move freely in the house. He would not let them answer multiple telephone calls we were making to the mother's cell phone. We were also trying to communicate with the suspect via PA system,” said Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes.
Officials say Smith has an extensive violent criminal history. At the time, he had an outstanding misdemeanor domestic violence warrant pending against him.
The children in the home were all under 14 years old. None belonged to smith.
