COLUMBIANA, Ala. (AP) - A Shelby County jury has unanimously
recommended that a man convicted of shooting to death an 11-year-old relative be sentenced to death.
The jury on Monday recommended that 37-year-old Ryan Russell deserved to die after being convicted of capital murder in the killing of 11-year-old Katherine Gillespie, who was his cousin. Russell was caring for the child in 2008 when she died from a gunshot to the back of the head.
The judge can accept or reject the recommendation at his Dec. 16
The girl was living with Russell after the death of her mother in 2007. Prosecutors say Russell shot the girl in the back of the head, stuffed her body in a plastic trash can and then shoved it in the back seat of his Cadillac.
