Hurricane Preparation

Debbie Peters says she doesn't need a weather model to tell her how bad tropical storms can get.

"I've been here and been through enough of them that I have seen what they can do,” said Debbie Peters.

So what should you do to prepare for a storm?

"Emergency kit with three days water supply, a flashlight, some batteries to last three days without power—in case your power does go off. You need things like tarps in case things come through the roof, duck tape, plastic to cover up windows that may be shattered, and you maybe even want to invest in a portable generator," said Robert Brewer, Project Specialist at Lowe’s.

Maybe you noticed how Robert kept repeating three days. You should have at least three days worth of supplies in your house. That is the advice Debbie follows.

"Well I stock up on canned goods and drinks and things like that and try to do it before it maybe actually comes here so that I can beat the crowds," said Peters.

These items can be kept throughout the entire hurricane season. So why wait?

"Well the paths do...they are subject to change but they are subject to come and change in our direction and if you wait until the last minute you are going to be fooling with large crowds at the stores," said Brewer.

If you stock up and prepare now, you'll be ready when the storm hits. Don't wait until it is too late.
