DOTHAN-- Several charities in the wiregrass have asked for financial help from the community, and today those wishes were met by center stage and the houston county foundation.
"There's a process that they go through, submit applications and then the board determines who gets those funds." said Mark Culver, Chairman of the Houston County Commission.
And today at the Houston County Commission meeting, several local charities were awarded financial assistance.
"Today they had six or seven good projects that were able to receive some pretty good funds. The library, the Wiregrass Museum, and various other organizations like that."
And Frank Wendt, president of the Houston Economic Developement, was there to present the charities with checks totaling 66 thousand dollars.
"All the net revenue goes to charities. Basically we just distributed the money we raised from bingo to the local charities through the houston county foundation." said Wendt.
"The houston-love memorial library here in dothan was just one of several organizations that received funds today."
"We were thrilled to be one of the receipients and we were even more thrilled that our donation was ear-marked for our capital campaign."
The library received ten thousand dollars to help fund the construction of two new libraries set to open in Dothan sometime next year.
"We anticipate breaking ground in October and completing construction in the last quarter of 2013."
And even though the library has a long way to go before they raise enough money to complete the construction, they are still more than greatful for the donation.
"Well it's very exciting. It's been a long time coming but i hope i can live to unlock that front door on the first day."
Afterall, it's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference....
