Local parents have complained that their students have been in large classes.
But Houston County says they are doing what they can to keep class sizes small.
"In kindergarten through third grade we try to keep it between 15-17 students and for first through third grade no more than 20 students," said Houston County schools supervisor, Rhonda Lassiter.
That is the goal for the Houston County School District but as students get older their class size increases.
"It depends on the grade level, we want the lower grades, k-3 to be the smallest and as you go up the class size can increase so in high school that depends on the course you are not going to have as many students in calculus as you have in general math," said Director of Accountability for Houston County schools, David Sewell.
Although high school students have more classmates Houston County is making sure there isn't any overcrowding.
"We have always been diligent in about being aware of the class size, as a matter a fact the superintendent and the supervisors go out and at the beginning of each year and we actually count the number of students we actually go out to the classrooms and count each student," said Lassiter.
A bill was introduced into Alabama legislature earlier this year in order to keep class sizes small but so far no action has been taken about the bill.
"If the bill passes then we would bee looking at hiring more elementary teachers and hopefully with that bill more funding will be available right now in our system we have an average of 20 students so we would be looking at hiring more elementary school teachers possibly one at each elementary school," said Lassiter.
And if it passes it would cover the costs of hiring new teachers and anything else needed to keep class sizes small.
"We are fortunate to have a lot of elementary applicants and a lot of really good applicants that would be a quick process for us," said Lassiter.
