Houston County Sanitation could be going hi-tech.

On Monday, the Commission will vote to approve upgrades to garbage services. If approved, cans with an electronic chip will be given out in November to residents who have Houston County pickup their garbage.

The new cans will help provide better service to residents and keep employees safe.

“The cans will help our ability to track customers so we can bill accurately and the other thing is we got the most dangerous position in the county is not the policemen or the sheriff or anyone else it is the guys on the back of the garbage truck and this eliminates those positions,” explained Bill Dempsey, Houston County Chief Administrator Officer.

The workers who used to ride on the back of garbage trucks have not been laid off, their positions have been eliminated through attrition.
