Donna McGee has worked in the healthcare industry for almost 40 years and knows how important it is to be properly trained.

"You can never know it all I don't know it all, I learn something everyday," said Covenant Hospice Coordinator McGee.

That's why McGee participates in training seminars around the Wiregrass where she makes sure home healthcare providers really know what they're doing.

"How do you give a shampoo in the bed? added McGee, those are things for some of us are very important but you don't think about it until you're in the caregiver position."

To offer a little assistance to those who take care of loved ones at home, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is holding a three part training workshop in Troy.
The training is August 15th, 22nd and 29th.
From noon to 4:45 each day.
There is a one time registration fee of $10.

Some topics covered will include transferring patients to wheel chairs and cars safely.

"You're concerned about their safety and you're concerned about your own," explained McGee.

Since you can potentially hurt yourself in the process as well.

"We'll give demonstrations and let the participants try to do it themselves," said Extension Agent Wanda Carpenter.

The workshop will also cover personal care.

"How to change the sheets with the person still in the bed, wash their hair," said Carpenter.

Even though it's a difficult job, with proper training those loved ones who want to stay home and be surrounded by family can still get quality care.

This isn't a certification course, but upon completion you will get a certificate listing all the topics covered.
