New shoes, new pens and pencils, and a new back pack.
All those things help, but are your children really ready for the back to school grind?

"That’s really tough for parents as well as for the children, but it is extremely important. In fact you really should have already started transitioning your children in preparation for Monday.” Heard Magnet Principal Peggy Maddox said.

And the biggest change, will be adjusting their sleep schedule.

“I usually stay up really late, and I love to sleep.” Seventh Grader Jolie Spence said.

“Being able to stay up late and then sleeping in late, so now you have to go to bed earlier instead of going to bed later.” 6th grader Meg Maddox said.

In fact, teachers say you should get your children to start going to bed early again, well before the night before school starts.

“It is a transition, so we are aware of that in school and that first week is tough, we have some sleepy children.” Maddox said.

But it's not all about sleep.

“We need to start thinking about more nutritious foods rather than just grabbing something from the fast food restaurant.” Maddox said.

But leaving that fun summer schedule behind will be tough.

“Just the fact that getting back on the schedule over summer is hard because you get used to one schedule and then as soon as you get used to it you have to revert back to another one.” 6th Grader Andi Shirley said.

And although it may be annoying, getting back on a schedule will make it that much easier for kids to get back into the swing of things.
Teachers also say it would be a good idea to look over some basic math and English skills before the big day.
